Martin Bell is a talented filmmaker and cinematographer who is well known for his work that unflinchingly shows life as it truly is and all of the joys and sorrows that come along with it. Bell has worked on many different projects, and has won several prestigious film festival awards for his work.

It is also noteworthy to mention that Bell is married to Mary Ellen Mark, the famed photographer. The two have cooperated on several projects meant to raise social awareness worldwide and to show life as it is, without being flinching or apologetic about it. Indeed, one of Bell’s most famous works is the documentary Streetwise.

Streetwise is a unique film due to the lack of scripting nor political agenda. Instead, Bell and Mary Ellen Mark sought out the community of children living on the streets of Seattle, and chronicled their lives in the least invasive way possible.

Streetwise is a powerful film because it simply shows the life that kids on the street are forced to live, and is unapologetic about capturing their pain, their hopes and fears, and their probable fates. While such films may not make the general viewing public feel comfortable, it does force awareness.

Indeed, that is one of the hallmarks of both Martin Bell and Mary Ellen Mark, in that they both share a love of truth and looking honestly at real social issues. While most people prefer to simply ignore what happens on the fringes, artists like Martin Bell look to it with a keen eye and reveal all of it. His films, documentaries, and short all take on the important issues without being afraid of being controversial.

Tino Soriano is one of the prominent photographers of contemporary life today. This photographer spends most of his time and talent between two passions: travel photography and clinical photography, where he strives to portray the essence and emotion of his subjects. This is especially apparent in his clinical photography, where he focuses on the terminally ill and the many different aspects of their medical experiences. He is known, as a photographer, as the People’s photographer because that is what he is all about.

He has even starred in a couple of National Geographic films, one in Turkey and the other one covering the festivities of El Rocio in Andalusia. Soriano is especially skilled in photographing the everyday elements that are seen, but not always processed by people. He is more focused on capturing the essence of a person, a place or a moment. Through his work, the world is able to examine itself, even if it does not always see what is right in front of it. Through Soriano’s pictures, viewers will be able to find beauty in the ordinary and marvel at their world, as well as being informed about the clinical aspects that make it up. The world has taken notice, and he was been honored by the UNESCO, WHO, and the World Press Photo Foundation for his art.

Back in July I went on a Family/Scouting trip to Southern Africa. We visited South Africa, Botswana and Zambia. It was terrific experience and a place where we could be announcing a photo workshop pretty soon, stay tuned for it. Following a few of the pictures I took during the trip.

Great game viewing, fantastic hotels immersed in the national parks, unparallelled service and a great sense of adventure everyday.
