MARY ELLEN MARK

MARY ELLEN MARK has achieved worldwide visibility through her numerous books, exhibitions and editorial magazine work. She is a contributing photographer to The New Yorker and has published photo-essays and portraits in such publications as LIFE, New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, and Vanity Fair. For almost three decades, she has traveled extensively to make pictures that reflect a high degree of humanism. Today, she is recognized as one of our most respected and influential photographers. Her images of our world’s diverse cultures have become landmarks in the field of documentary photography. Her portrayals of Mother Teresa, Indian circuses, and brothels in Bombay were the product of many years of work in India. A photo essay on runaway children in Seattle became the basis of the academy award nominated film STREETWISE, directed and photographed by her husband, Martin Bell.

Mary Ellen has received many awards and grants including the Cornell Capa Award, the Infinity Award for Journalism, an Erna & Victor Hasselblad Foundation Grant, and a Walter Annenberg Grant for her book and exhibition project on AMERICA. Among her other awards are the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, the Matrix Award for outstanding woman in the field of film/photography, and the Dr. Erich Salomon Award for outstanding merits in the field of journalistic photography. She was also presented with honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degrees from her Alma Mater, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of the Arts; three fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts; the Photographer of the Year Award from the Friends of Photography; the World Press Award for Outstanding Body of Work Throughout the Years; the Victor Hasselblad Cover Award; two Robert F. MARTIN BELL

Martin Bell started out as a freelance cinematographer for documentaries and drama on English television before coming to the U.S. 20 years ago. Martin is at ease in both documentary and narrative storytelling. He has directed such documentaries as Academy Award nominated "Streetwise", which followed the lives of runaway kids on the streets of Seattle and “The Amazing Plastic Lady” set in the Indian Circus. He has directed narrative features films including "American Heart" starring Jeff Bridges and "Hidden in America", a moving portrait of a family struggling with poverty featuring both Beau and Jeff Bridges.

His latest film "Prom" explores the complex lives of teenagers as they transition from childhood to adulthood. Students were interviewed at their own proms about relationships, school work, family, friends, and their hopes and dreams for the future. The film is a companion piece to his wife Mary Ellen Mark’s photographic project of the same name. “Prom” was in the opening night program at the Los Angeles Shorts Fest.

His ongoing film project, “A New York Story”, aims to capture the energy and resilient spirit of New York City since September 11, 2001.

His commercial clients have included Nike, making for them a spot about major league baseball hopefuls in the Dominican Republic, a real people campaign for CSFB online trading, and most recently a beautiful black & white campaign for the Visiting Nurse Service of New York.

TINO SORIANO

Born in Barcelona, Spain, Tino shares his work as a photojournalist with Travel Photography. Her has been honoured with one First Prize from the world Photo Foundation; the trophies “One Vision European Photographic Competition”, “Fujifilm Photographer of the year”; the international “Lente de Plata Award” by Mexican government and five prizes FOTOPRESS (the most important Spanish distinction for press photography)> His workhas been also recognized by UNESCO, World Health Organization and Medical Sciences Academy of Catalonia, among others.

Some of his latest jobs have been the National Geographic Traveler Books: Sicily, Portugal, Madrid and Naples & Southern Italy, with other personal books and photojournalist stories, on assignment for different cporporative and media customers.

He regularly lectures and teached workshops at many universities like: University “Pompeu Fabra”, University “Politecnica de Terrassa” and University of Barcelona.

ERNESTO BAZAN (Coming in Spring 2013)

Born in Palermo in 1959, he received his first camera when he was 14 years old and began photographing daily life in his native city and in the rural areas of Sicily. Photography has been more than a profession: a true passion, a mission in his life. Bazan has published several books: The Perpetual Past, Passing Through, The First Twenty Years, Island, Molo Nord.

He has had exhibitions in Europe, Latin America and the United States. His photographs have been collected by collectors and museums among which MOMA and ICP in New York, SFMOMA in San Francisco, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, Durham, the South East Museum of Photography in Daytona, the Fondazione Italiana della Fotografia in Turin, the Biblioteque Nationale in Paris and the Musee Rattau in Arles.

From 1992 to 2006, he lived and photographed the island of Cuba documenting the unique time in Cuban history called The Special Period. This body of work has given him the privilege to win some of the world most prestigious photographic awards among them The W. Eugene Smith grant; the Mother Jones Foundation for Photojournalism, the World Press Photo and two fellowships from the Alicia Patterson Foundation and the Guggenheim Foundation.

In 2002, Ernesto Bazan created his own photographic workshops providing special emphasis in Latin America. Teaching has become his ruling passion. Several hundred students have studied with him in the last six years. 

He lives with his wife Sissy, his twin boys Pietro and Stefano and their two dogs Diva and Ono in Veracruz, Mexico.

ANDY RICHTER (2012 Easter Celebrations in Guatemala Photo Workshop):

The pursuit of compelling images and desire to connect with humanity inside and out has led Andy Richter to 40 countries with his camera in hand. Based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, he is a freelance photographer shooting for editorial, non-profit, and advertising clients. He photographs for Time Magazine, National Geographic Traveler, UNICEF, Outside, New York Daily News, The Times of India, AARP as well as a wide range of other clients at home and abroad. When not being commissioned to create, Andy is immersed in personal photographic projects, regular yoga practice, and life in the company of others. Essential elements of his photographic approach are trust and respect, intuition, working with light, and being there. His teaching style is very experiential, shooting right along side his students as he works with them.

Andy's recent work includes a long-term project on Childhood Obesity with Time Magazine that can be seen with audio on Time.com. His work with the Oro Win tribe in the Brazilian Amazon has recently exhibited in San Juan, Puerto Rico. A work in progress, Youth Culture: Taipei, has been keeping him busy of late in Taiwan's bustling capital. He is represented by Aurora Photos.

MICHAEL HANSON

Award winning photographer based in Seattle, WA and was named one of the World's Top Travel Photographers by Popular Photography Magazine. Michael's photography career began while playing baseball in the Atlanta Braves farm system. His access to this unique lifestyle sparked a behind-the-scenes series that would eventually lead him to a career in photography.

Michael's travel/lifestyle work has taken him on assignments to Chile, Mexico, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Belize, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, British Columbia, and throughout the US. Michael has undertaken documentary projects investigating the changing lives of indigenous cultures in Ecuador, Guatemala, Chile, Lau Group, Fiji, Rwanda , Bolivia, Venezuela and Ethiopia. In 2010 Michael completed a 7-week book project (Breaking Through Concrete) documenting urban farming in the US. He has taught numerous photography workshops, including National Geographic Student Expeditions in the Sacred Valley, Peru. He was a judge for the 2010 and 2011 DC Fotoweek  Photography contest.

His editorial clients include The New York Times, USA Today, US Airways, Continental, National Geographic Adventure, Outside, Patagonia, Coastal Living, Sunset, NPR, Sierra Club among others. His fine art images are part of the permanent archive at the Sir Elton John Photography Collection. Although his work has evolved from the first project on baseball, the passion for capturing people and their immediate landscapes in a clean, natural, documentary style remains at the core of Michael Hanson Photography.

CRISTINA LlERENA

Cristina Llerena holds a BFA in Photography from the Allende Institute in San Miguel Allende, Mexico. She is a documentary and commercial photographer. Since 2005 she has been a teaching assistant for the Santa Fe Workshops in San Miguel Allende working for photographers such as Jock Sturges and Ralph Lee Hopkins as well as coordinated and assisted National Geographic Expeditions through Mexico with David Alan Harvey, Bob Sacha, and Raul Touzon. SELMA FERNANDEZ

Selma was born in Oaxaca, Mexico in 1974. She has a B.S in Communication Science from the ITESM Campus Monterrey. She studied photography at Gris Art in Barcelona, at the Escuela Argentina de Fotografia in Buenos Aires, with Mary Ellen Mark in Oaxaca and Michael Grecco in Rockport, Maine. Selma is a freelance photographer for publications such as Expansion (Time Inc.) and Proceso among others. She works for The Santa Fe Workshops and National Geographic Expeditions where she has assisted Raul Touzon, Eniac Martinez, and David Alan Harvey.
